Bonnard's main model and lifelong companion, Marthe Boursin comes out of the bath. she leans lightly against the white conch, like a barely emerged Venus. Its warm pink body contrasts with the ambient whiteness, a formless whiteness, crossed by light, evoking a frothy foam, much more than the hygienic gloss usually associated with bathrooms.
