A portrait of a Tahitian woman in a European dress and with a flower in her hair is one of Gauguin's earliest works of the early Tahitian period. In 1891, the painter moved to the island and settled there, after purchasing a cabin. A new way of life, a completely different morality and way of life, a different aesthetic appealed to and inspired Gauguin.
