The Scream

Munch has produced five versions around this theme depicting angst. Inspired by a vision of the artist while walking with friends, the painter depicts an almost mummified figure, who covers his ears. Is he trying to escape an unbearable cry? He is both the protagonist and the anonymous victim of a horror scene. The sky is glowing and tortured, perhaps inspired by a very real scientific phenomenon: the ashes poured into the atmosphere by the eruption of a volcano in Indonesia, which would have had repercussions as far as northern Europe. . It is one of the most famous masterpieces in the history of art, reinterpreted and tweaked many times.
