18th Century French Santos Cage Doll Figure

An early cage figure with a sensitively rendered face. The gaze of the glass eyes is cast slightly upward to the heavens; the expression, serine. France, mid to late 18th century In completely original condition with no restoration or repair. Crazing and minor paint loss, losses to ends of some fingers. Originally, A Santos was created for use with in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war. Height  18.5" Width  8.5" Depth  8.5"
