The Phonograph Entertains

Imagine that you're among the first to enter a house that's been boarded up since 1925 -- its contents locked in time. (Let's imagine that dust, humidity, and rodents haven't been a problem!) Everything is just as it was nearly a century ago. In the corner of the parlor sits a majestic floor model phonograph, its carefully buffed wooden cabinet gleaming. Opening the doors to the record storage compartment, you find several dozen mint-condition 78 rpm records looking as if they had just come from the store. There are vaudeville sketches, marching bands, vocal quartets, dance bands, instrumental solos, whistling records, and much more. You wind up the phonograph, insert a steel needle, and play one... and then another... and then another. Soon a very pleasant hour has passed, filled with the marvelous entertainment of voices and instrumentalists from a century ago.
