Dyed with Toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia Toyon is a perennial shrub that grows in the chaparral and oak woodland habitats here in the Santa Monica Mountains. Her distinct serrated leaves and bright red berries make her recognizable throughout this coastal mountain landscape. When it comes to extracting color, toyon can give a variety of hues based on the extraction method. We have been able to use her bark, leaves and berries to get colors of cream, peachy-orange, and various shades of pink.
