Upon arrival in New York, the vast majority of Sarouks, in every quality and size, were hand painted with a darker jewel tone red to suit the tastes of the time, supposedly with syringes. Made with quality materials, many of these rugs have held up and are still in serviceable condition and need only be maintained with an occasional professional cleaning.
