Originally, the 1144 Collar Fastener was used to secure horses and other animals to carts and the like. It was designed to unfasten quickly in the event the animal was spooked and needed to be released instantly before hurting itself or what it was carrying. We chose this piece of hardware for our messenger bag both for it’s security when closed, and for the speed and ease in which it opens allowing you quick access to your items. Full disclosure, the fact that it looks really cool may also have played a part in our decision!
