A hanging wall scroll that depicts a pair of crows in flight. The official title of this piece is 暁鳥 (Akatsuki Tori). [Artist Biography] Watanabe Shotei (Seitei) was born in 1851 in Edo, present-day Tokyo. Initially studying painting, he began working under Shibata Zeshin (柴田是眞) (1807-1891), a prominent figure in Japanese painting, lacquer art, and printmaking. Zeshin Shibata represented Japan at various international exhibitions, including Vienna in 1875, Philadelphia in 1876, and Paris in 1878.
