A Quiet Place
A QUIET PLACE By Rachael Thompson Jefferson Island, Louisiana, 2010. Silver halide black and white photograph printed on archival paper. Edition: Open ABOUT THIS SERIES - L'AME DU BAYOU L'ame du Bayou (Soul of the Bayou) is photographer Rachael Thompson's homage to the land that birthed her family and its traditions. Here, on the waterlogged expanses of southern Louisiana, they built vibrant farming communities, harvesting the bayou’s unusual resources to create a cuisine as distinctive as their Cajun language and culture. This is a land of contradictions. The landscape looks inhospitable, but the roots run deep. The earth feels wet, but it doesn’t bog down the people. The humidity soaks the senses, but that just helps their hugs linger on the skin a little longer. This is Louisiana.
