Alder Cones (Approx. 4-ounce package)

The tiny fruit of the Alder trees (Aalnus glutinosa and Alnus incana) has been widely utilized by aquarium hobbyists in Europe for some time. Betta and ornamental shrimp breeders are fond of the tannins released into the water by these cones, and their alleged anti fungal and antibacterial properties.  Our little Alder Cones are collected just for us in areas that are free from pollutants, insecticides, and pesticides by a great source who just happens to be a fish geek, too! We recommend a starting quantity of about 5-8 cones for every 10 U.S. gallons of aquarium capacity, although there is no hard and fast rule about this. They can lower the pH of soft water surprisingly quickly, while imparting a nice brownish tint.
