Georgian Halley's Comet Brooch

An antique Georgian Halley's comet brooch, circa 1835, crafted in 14k yellow gold accented by black enamel, set with a cushion-cut paste to represent the nucleus. Named after English astronomer Edmond Halley, who determined in the early 18th century that certain comet sightings in 1531, 1607, and 1682 were actually the same comet returning over and over again, this celestial apparition returns to earth roughly every 75 years. It's been sighted by almost every culture throughout recorded history; there are theories that Halley's was first seen by early Mesopotamian astrologers who described "a star which appears once in seventy years that makes the captains of the ships err." The prediction of its return in 1835 caused a public fervor and the Halley's comet motif became a popular brooch form, crafted in precious metals and gems for the elite, as well as paste and base metals for the less socially privileged.
