English George III Chippendale slant front secretary desk with glazed astral doors (c. 1770)
George III secretary bookcase with glazed astral doors on a slant front desk. The case is defined by a denticulated cove cut cornice above a figured mahogany entablature and astragal double doors which open to a three shelf interior. The central shelf is fixed in place but the upper and lower shelves can be repositioned at several heights. The back of the bookcase is fitted with white foam core panels which can be removed if desired. The book case rests on a slant front desk, and the interior of the desk is fitted with a centered prospect door, flanked by four pigeon holes and three shallow stepped drawers on either side. There are also two hidden removable drawers that are accessed through notches at the rear of the prospect door compartment. Below the desk are four long drawers fitted with pierced bat wing brass plates and swan neck pulls. The case rest on its original bracket feet. Pale mahogany and figured mahogany veneers.
