1000 Years Old Italy Sourdough Starter
This Italian sourdough starter is possibly one of the oldest in continual use. Purchased from J.Davenport's Famous Sourdough starters. Their source purchased this starter a decade ago at a little bakery tucked into the Tuscan Apennine mountain range; a bakery that got their starter a hundred years prior from the monks at the nearby Camaldoli Monastery. This monastery was built circa 1012 A.D. by St. Romauld, a Benedictine monk, who wanted to create a place for solitary religious reflection. To this day, the Sacred Hermitage of Camaldoli continues to house Benedictine Camaldolese monks, who live, worship, and bake onsite. Legend holds that the sourdough starter they nurtured a thousand years ago is still being used by these monks today, and through the efforts of J. Davenport their sourdough starter can be shared beyond their beautiful sacred mountainside. (J.
