The Squire of Alsatia, Thomas Shadwell First edition of one of Shadwell's most successful plays, first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre. One of the best-remembered roles, that of the shrewish Mrs. Termagant was first performed by Elizabeth Boutell. It was revived numerous times during the eighteenth century. London: James Knapton, at the Queen's-Head in St. Paul's Church, 1688. Bound in modern brown sheepskin, with title square dyed in black, stamped in gilt, raise bands and gilt-stamped lines to spine, modern endpapers; pp. (viii), 72. Hint of a smudge to front cover, else binding and covers fine. Pages toned and foxed, with scattered soiling, several pages show areas of minor loss and creasing, a couple notations to dramatis personae, loss to title page not affecting text. Overall in nice shape. Rare.
