Air France - Rome
Brightly colored as usual, this poster by Jacques Nathan-Garamond uses smooth and simple lines to create a modern view of Rome. It has an interesting duality to see: the three dimensional foreground with light and shadows, and the two dimensional back with flat and cartoon like houses. Nathan transformed the ancient Rome architecture style into a more Bauhaus look, but cleverly kept the classic columns and ancient remains to represent Rome. Jacques Nathan-Garamond (1910 - 2001) was a French graphic designer. He studied at École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and served as Director of Contemporary Architecture before his career as a designer. After the war, Nathan-Garamond became a graphic designer and designed a piece for 1949 UNESCO exposition on the Rights of Man. He also created commercial designs for corporations like Mazda, Air France and Telefunken.
