Cherry blossoms, the national flower of Japan, decorate the upper portion of this beautiful travel poster to Yokohama. Yokohama is Japan’s second largest city and best known for its housing of the Sankei-en Garden, a botanical park that exhibits different styles of Japanese residences throughout generations. This poster is one of a series commissioned by American President Lines to promote travel by way of ship using their 50 port locations. The American President Lines was created in 1938, just prior to World War II, as a result of the renaming of the Dollar Steamship Lines which emerged from bankruptcy as APL. By 1940 the American Government commissioned 16 new ships, all to be named after American Presidents. The growth of the company continued for the next 70 years with American President Lines Ltd, along with its parent company CMA CGM, the world’s third largest container transportation and shipping company providing more than 80 services.
