This poster was created to promote an exhibition of Andy Warhol's "Athletes" series at the Virginia Museum. It was a traveling exhibition of the artists' latest works featuring silkscreen portraits of the most famous athletes of the day. The series was commissioned and conceptualized by Warhol's friend and art dealer, Richard Weisman in 1977. Athletes in the series ranged from Muhammad Ali to Chris Evert. Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) was an American artist, film director and producer. Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, where he tackled the integration of art, celebrity and consumerist culture in his works. Well known for his serigraphs such as his Marilyn Diptych and Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol also produced and directed his own experimental films such as "Chelsea Girls", created Interview Magazine and managed The Velvet Underground.
