This famous image is by celebrated poster artist Leonetto Cappiello. This particular poster is from the first printing in 1922. We see an elegant, dreamy image that pops against the black background, offering forth an over-flowing glass of bubbling Contratto. Giuseppe Contratto founded his winery in the Piedmont region of Italy in 1867. Using the Muscat grapes that grow in the area, Contratto became known as one of the first creators of sparkling wine. They supplied the Vatican, and began to diversify into the international liqueur market in the 1920s. The hand-dug caves under the winery in the town of Canelli have been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, and the brand is still in production today. Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century.
