The lifecycle of most bumblebees is a dramatic one and short one. Once the entire colony of a bumblebee dies before winter, a newly mated bumblebee queen will fly off in search of a place to hibernate for the winter. Piles of leaves, under bark debris, into loose soil, and sometimes abandoned rodent burrows are where she will crawl into for the winter. All places that are disturbed and destroyed when we do our fall clean ups, or spring clean ups too early in the season when they are still sleeping. Our bumblebees often get raked and leaf blown up when fall clean ups are done and they sometimes do not survive. They are another important reason to leave the leaves.  This queen found a dead piece of tree bark to sleep in for the winter. The perfect piece that curls up around her and keeps her safe.
