Available is an early 20th century stoneware jar, produced by Sainsbury's to hold bloater paste. Bloater paste is a herring paste, made from a recipe developed in the 1890s. It was marketed as a "tasty tea-time treat on toast." This jar is an excellent example of the type used during the interwar period between 1920-1940. Strong lettering and graphics, with the monogram "S" decorated with a thistle flower. Short squat shape. Imported from England.
