A Very Interesting & RARE Antique 17th-18th Century European Bronze Bell
A Very Interesting & RARE Antique 17th-18th Century Bronze Bell. The Bell depicts (4) portraits (most likely religious Saints). Smaller size is for a Roman Catholic Mission or small ship or a small bell for use on a large ship. Iron clapper is missing. Has a great loud tone. The bell has a very pleasing green-brown age patina. The suspension section shows wear from being suspended from a piece of leather, rope, or chain. This size of bell was not only designed for use on a ship or in a mission but most importantly, for travel by the missionaries tasked by the Church to spread the word and convert as many people in the New World as possible. The bell was cast with (4) portraits (most likely religious Saints). Overall Measures - 5.25" high, almost 5" in diameter. SOME HISTORY: Possibly associated with "I H S" ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. The New World- Catholics and the Colonies Efforts to set up a permanent settlement by the Spanish in the 16th century were mostly unfruitful
