Alpine Sea Holly - Eryngium alpinum
Excellent for rock gardens or dry sunny locations, this tough plant makes a 2 foot tall thistle-like bloom during summer. Large clusters of blue to bluish grey flowers are a feast for bees and wasps, and make a beautiful cut flower specimen, fresh or dry. This plant is tolerant of poor soil, saline conditions, drought and cold, so don't kill it with kindness by overwatering or planting in soil that's overly rich. This is a plant native to high elevations, so if you're interested in a sea holly for warmer climates, check out the Eryngium planum.
