Made in Italy circa 1930s, I absolutely love the colors of this floral micro-mosaic, from the daffodil yellow background, to the vibrant orange and cobalt details. Note the mosaic-like border as well: the palette and design details make this extremely unusual, setting it apart from other micro-mosaics. This jewelry style was made popular in Italy, and became extreme fashionable during the Grand Tour Period (1680-1880), during which wealthy families would take lengthy trips around Europe, and pick up distinct examples of regional craftsmanship along the way. I've always been enamored with micro-mosaic jewelry and decorative art, and the way it's made is so fascinating: To create a micro mosaic, rods of opaque vitreous glass made, and then cut into tiny fragments called "tesserae." These pieces are assembled by hand in a small metal tray, in a very labor-intensive process. You will sometimes see modern reproductions of Italian micro-mosaic jewelry, but it is immediately identifiable as n
