A young Victorian of means would go on a trip when they reached an age of maturity. Called ‘The Grand Tour’, this trip took them to places like Italy and Greece to visit the classic sites of history and beauty. They would collect and bring back souvenirs from these trips, things like micro-mosaics, pietra dura plaques and, often, cameos. These pieces would be taken to jewelers once back in England and turned into jewelry, much like this hard stone cameo. This locket was likely made to be worn as a watch fob. It’s hand crafted in 15 karat gold and set with wonderful sardonyx hard stone cameo. The cameo showcases a soldier with a large comedy mask under one arm standing with a spear next to a showy peacock. The locket measures 34.5 mm north to south and 17.7 mm across, it’s 10.7 mm thick and weighs 7 grams. The locket has no marks but tests as 15 karat gold. Made in England around 1880.
