Born June 21st, 1776, Charles Horsfall would go on to lead quite an interesting life. At the age of 16, he would travel to Jamaica and establish himself as a merchant and trader, at 27 he would marry Dorothy Hall Berry, and together they would have 12 children. At 53 he became Bailiff of Liverpool and four years later its Mayor. Over his life he built up an empire for himself trading with West Africa, the West Indies and the Americas. This miniature shows him as a young man, dressed in a fine white shirt and blue jacket was perhaps done for his mother before he left for Jamaica. Sea travel was perilous back then and no doubt his mother would want a portrait of him before he left. Open the magnificent box that was made to act as both holder and frame for this magnificent piece and it reveals a true treasure; an 18k gold and pearl miniature portrait, delicately nestled within its fitted case, and bearing to the reverse the engraved inscription "Charles Horsfall born June 21st, 1776."
