Built in 1936 by Shigematsu Honjiyo as part of the Aloha Theater, the Aloha Sweet Shop was an example of the artful and distinctive window lettering fashionable in the 1920s and '30s. During that era, Hanapepe was Kauai's entertainment capital with movies and novelty acts from Japan, feature films from the States, and Kauai's annual E.K. Fernandez carnival. The shop was renowned for its "shave ice" and very popular with theatergoers.
