Snowy Staredown

On a May afternoon in Yellowstone, winter stubbornly refused to concede to spring. Light snowfall lingered throughout the day. From seemingly nowhere this beautiful red fox appeared, complete with perhaps winter’s last snowfall resting upon its snout. This fox was moving quickly; to somewhere or from something. This is one of the most intense glares I’ve ever received from a wild animal. While it seemed to last an eternity, this staredown lasted no more than a few seconds, as this fox was in a hurry. Moments later, I understood why: the fox had just crossed paths with a much larger coyote. The fox had escaped this encounter, and would be that much closer to a beautiful Yellowstone spring and summer.
