Antique 17th century large leather bound book. Dating to 1645 published in Geneva by Samuel Chouet this law dictionary is written in latin (latin was the choice language of law). Covering subjects such as civil, criminal: theoretical and practical, and used in the school and in the market as set down by Joannis Calvini and features engraved vignettes on the first few pages. At the time of printing Joannis Calvini was Doctor of Law and professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. This is signed by the original owner Henry Thompson (7 June 1659 – 6 July 1700) of Escrick who was an English landowner and politician who paid 13 shillings for it. It was then labelled in the library of his son Beilby Thompson (1689- 1750) Beilby who was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1730. The Thompsons were a prominent Yorkshire family.
