DESCRIPTIONVintage Carlton Ware match holder striker with a coat of arms. Known as blush ware Wiltshaw & Robinson introduced this highly successful range of earthenwares around 1890. The earlier crown mark on the ceramic piece dates this piece to between 1889 and 1926. Beautifully adorned with the coat of arms of Cambridge University, the matches are stored in the center.Marked on base: W&R Stoke on Trent, Carlton Ware Marked on Face: Gules, on a cross ermine between four lions passant guardant Or, a Bible lying fesseways of the field, clasped and garnished of the third, the clasps in baseThis would suit any living room or smoking parlor, be used on a dining room table as a toothpick or candle holder when entertaining.
