Antique Carlton Ware W & R Stoneware Match Holder
Vintage Carlton Ware match holder striker with the Mackenzie clan coat of arms. Known as blush ware Wiltshaw & Robinson introduced this highly successful range of earthenwares around 1890. The earlier crown mark on the ceramic piece dates this piece to between 1889 and 1926. This British made piece was made for the commercial market as a gift from the Strathpeffer spa in Scotland and retailed by a jeweler J Ross. Beautifully adorned with the MacKenzie coat of arms with the motto "I shine not burn". The matches are stored in the center and struck on the rough edged side of the ceramic body. Marked on base: W&R Stoke on Trent, Carlton Ware J Ross Jeweler Strathpeffer Marked on Face: Loisgin agus Soillerignim Luceo Non Uro Strathpeffer Spa This would suit any living room or smoking parlor, be used on a dining room table as a toothpick or candle holder when entertaining.
