The subjects I chose mostly relate to Chinese literati painting motifs, such as Four Gentlemen (plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum), flowers, birds, landscapes, fish and certain animals. I also portray classic maidens, still life, and immediate impression through the unique old form of album leaves. My intention with woodcut prints is not to create a new visual appearance but to reach the spiritual summit of the historical models and to find an implicit style of conveying my personal aesthetics or inner affection. For me, artistic creation is a faithful reflection of one’s real-life state. Another priceless treasure that woodcut prints gave me is my working spirit.
