Small Chinese Rose Medallion Notched Leaf Dish Circa 1920
An unusually shaped serving dish with a notched end and a pierced leaf handle. A heavily molded porcelain dish with a notched serving end, ribbed well, and a pierced leaf handle. The dish has been decorated in a polychrome rose medallion design. The rounded bumpy mouth rim is painted with an iron red. Gilt has been used on the ring in the central well and as a background for scrolling. The dish has a shallow unglazed foot ring with a glazed base. This piece has vibrant colors with almost an oily appearance to the glaze, and the flowers and other elements demonstrate significant shading. There is a mark in iron red on the base. It reads "MADE IN CHINA" in a red box. Provenance: From the Ellis Family collection. Most of the collection was acquired by Dr Robert Hale Ellis of Portland, OR during his regular visits to China and Japan as a physician during the 1920s-1930s.
