1981 Breininger Redware Sgraffito Plate Bird Tulips Heart Start Day With a Smile

Description: This is a nice and early glazed and sgraffito decorated redware plate. The plate, which we believe was made by Lester Breininger himself, has a flat base with flared rounded sides rising to a lightly coggeled edge. The plate is decorated with a sgraffito design depicting s bird, several tulips and a heart. The heart has the words "Start each day with a SMILE!" in it. The plate has a yellow colored ground with the sgraffito design showing brown colors. The plate also has green highlight indicative of copper oxide. The plate is glazed with unglazed back having the characteristic color of unglazed redware. The back signed and dated by Lester Breininger himself. This is an early plate made by Lester Breininger himself. This type of decoration is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties.
