Description: A nice small glazed and sgraffito decorated redware pie plate. The plate has a flat base with flared rounded sides rising to a lightly coggled rim. The plate is decorated with a sgraffito design depicting a bird perched on a tulip flower. The bird is looking backwards and the tulip is bend to the right. The design itself is in the reddish-brown coloring typical of redware sgraffito decoration and is surrounded with green sponged highlights indicative of copper oxide all on a yellow background. The plate was made in the studios of Lester Breininger on May 26, 1994. This type of decoration is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties. The plate is glazed on the inside but not on the back. The unglazed back has the characteristic color of unglazed redware and is signed by the artist.
