Eastern Bark Centipede (Hemiscolopendra marginata)

Eastern Bark Centipede (Hemiscolopendra marginata)

Eastern bark centipedes (Hemiscolopendra marginata) are small species of centipede native the southeastern United States. They typically do not exceed 3" and exhibit various shades of green and grayish blue. H. marginata are the first known centipede species to exhibit sexual dimorphism through venom composition.  Eastern bark centipedes are hardy and simple to care for while still displaying many of the interesting behaviors of larger centipedes, they are great beginner centipede for those nervous about jumping into larger pedes.   This species has grown on me quite a bit over the past few years just due to how under appreciated they are in captive collections. Like many other smaller species of centipede they are often passed over in the hobby for larger and more colorful Scolopendra/Ethmostigmus. This species is also a great feeder centipede for specialized centipede-eating animals such as Scolecophis and Tantilla. Currently available specimens are field-collected juveniles-adults.
