Acrylic on canvas.There’s folklore that says mischievous nymphs used to hide in the petals of peonies which connects the flower to bashfulness and shame. This flower is a symbol of many other beautiful things like romance, wealth, and healing, but I was struck by the paradox of the stunning beauty of my favorite flower and this darker meaning. I think in real life, most if not all of us have tried to hide behind something beautiful to hide our guilt and shame. But God sees us for who we really are. And through Jesus, he wants us anyway.
