Carpinus caroliniana (American Hornbeam / Blue Beech / Musclewood) is a native understory tree that can be used extremely well in shade and woodland gardens for that sub-canopy naturalized texture. It can also perform well as mid-level visual screens.  Leaves are a beautiful yellow to orange in the fall.  The bark on this tree is unique because of its smooth yet muscular look, giving it another common name of musclewood.
