NIAGARA & AORANGI - Canadian Australasian Line sailings & fares brochure 1935

Canadian Australasian Line: A twenty-eight page sailings and fares brochure dated 1935 for "The Sunshine Route to Ports of Romance". Included are the disaster ship NIAGARA of 1913 - more about that later - and sister ship AORANGI of 1925. The route was from Vancouver to Sydney and back, with stops at Victoria, Honolulu, Suva, and Auckland. The voyage took twenty-four days each way. Extensive rates show a "Cabin de Luxe" with bath and toilet costing $764 for two one-way.  Photos show a portrait of the the AORANGI as well her Dining Room, Children's Nursey, Lounge, and Verandah Cafe. Aerial views of Wellington and Sydney show low-rise cities with few cars.  With AORANGI survived WW2 and went to the breakers in 1953, the NIAGARA hit a mine laid by the German raider ORION and sank in 1940. All souls aboard were saved, but the ship went down with 590 gold bars from South Africa.
