NOORDAM & ZAANDAM - Rare 1938 deck plan - 1 ship survived WW2, 1 didn't
Holland American Line: A rare tissue deck plan from October 1938 for the new combo liners NOORDAM and ZAANDAM. The NOORDAM took her maiden voyage in September '38 while the ZAANDAM first sailed in January '39. Only one would survive the war. The plan unfolds to 21" by 31". Five decks are shown in detail, right down to the Engineers' lavatory and Captain's sitting room on Boat Deck. Promenade Deck held an array of public rooms, while A and B decks were filled with accommodations. A photo of a cabin mock-up shows furniture reminiscent of that used on flagship NIEUW AMSTERDAM. A portrait shows a painting of the NOORDAM at sea. While the NOORDAM survived the war as a troopship and sailed until 1967, the ZAANDAM's career was short-lived. She sailed in commercial service for two years before joining the war effort. In November 1942 the ZAANDAM was hit by two German torpedoes off the coast of Brazil. The ship sank in just minutes.
