He famously founded the Barnum and Bailey Circus in 1870 at the Age of 60!  In 1841, Barnum purchased Scudder's American Museum, renaming it Barnum's American Museum. 1942 Barnum introduced the "FEEJEE MERMAID" and General Tom Thumb. During the American Civil War Barnum put many shows on showcasing many of his "Oddities." He was Pro-Union. Southern Confederate sympathizers burned his museum to the ground in 1864. He rebuilt the museum and again in 1868, this new museum also burned to the ground.
