Abies balsamea / Balsam Fir

The Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) is a striking evergreen conifer known for its aromatic fragrance and classic conical shape — commonly used for Christmas trees, but also is a versatile tree that makes a great windbreak. It features soft, dark green needles with silvery undersides and emits a delightful balsam scent. Growing 12-24 inches per year, it can reach 40-70 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide. Plant Balsam Firs 20-25 feet apart to allow for proper growth and air circulation. They prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil and thrive in full sun to partial shade; it requires regular watering, especially during dry periods.
