A large shrub growing about 12 feet tall and almost as wide, elderberry explodes with white flowers in June which turn into the small black berries you see here. Known for its immune boosting qualities, Sambucus canadensis is used to make a diverse array of treats and remedies including elderflower champagne, elderberry wine, and elderberry syrup. Native to eastern North America, it’s often found in wetter areas such as stream banks, but will tolerate a broad range of soil conditions.
