This is an original 1940 color print portrait of a woman on Sulu island in the Philippine Islands. The Sulu archipelago is located in the southwestern Philippines. The caption writes, "The Moros in the Sulu islands recognize one of two rival Sultans. Each of the Sultans claims ownership of nearby British North Borneo-- a question of hegemony never argued, protested, or settled by U. S. authorities. The woman above, like many Sulu Moros, has filed and blackened her teeth." Photography by Fenno Jacobs. Charles Fenno Jacobs (1904-1974) was born in Waltham, Massachusetts. He had a recognized reputation as a photographer by 1941, and worked for Life Magazine as well as Fortune.
