With 1,542 farmer members of the co-op coming from a variety of different villages, Gachatha Coffee Factory has greatly contributed to a bigger sense of community. Because the area is so densely populated, the waste water from washing coffee cherries is treated in soaking pits far away from local water sources to make sure water isn’t contaminated with coffee runoff. The community also receives training and initiatives on planting native trees in the area to help preserve the existing bird life. Because the coffee factory has been in operation since 1963, daily operations are smooth. Farmers are paid for the cherry they bring to the coffee factory, but also have access to pre-financing for things like school fees or farm
