We Taste: Tamarind - Hibiscus Tea - Candied Grapefruit - Cinnamon Light Roast In the northeastern corner of Kirinyaga County lies Kamwangi Coffee Factory, located near the buffer zone surrounding Mount Kenya National Park. The towering presence of the snow capped Mount Kenya plays a fundamental role in the coffee production and lives of those who live in Kirinyaga, which translates to “White Mountain.” Glacial runoff feeds the rivers, cooling the surrounding areas, making temperatures much more tolerable than other coffee growing regions in Africa. A long chain of mountains in the region creates a diversity of altitudes and terrain for coffee cultivation. Despite the mountain range, most farms are only about a 30 minute walk to Kamwangi. Before coffee is brought to the washing station, farmers hand sort their harvest to remove unripe and overripe cherries. Once it arrives, the coffee is de-pulped and fermented for 24-36 hours, then washed and graded by density. The water used for
