Shikimono like this one were used around a sunken hearth to insulate from the cold floor.  The rug is made from one side of Kasuri tie resisted cotton fabric with cotton wadding filler and indigo cotton boro backside.   Boro is a Japanese form of recycling coming from an economic necessity in which fabric is patched on the reverse side to preserve the usability.  The beauty comes from the unintentional artistry created from layers of mending.  Wear consistent with age and use.  Indigo cotton Boro patchwork  Early 20th century 55" x 57.5 " (length, width) SKU: FT-3284
