Monk seals are one of the most endangered species in the world, with less than 1600 residing in the Hawaiian Islands, most of which are in the remote North western Islands. About 400 now call the main Hawaiian Islands home. When I grew up in Honolulu, they were an extreme rarity. Now, if you are lucky, you will find one snoozing on the beach. If you are so fortunate, please protect them by staying the regulated 50 feet or more away from them.
