late nineteenth, early twentieth century4 yards x 14 1/2", 3.65 m x 37 cm  This is a very good, long piece of rustically woven hemp mesh cloth which was dyed in indigo and now has a warm, deep, blue/green/blue tone, a kind of color that is hard to describe. The yarns used to weave this piece are wiry and are hand plied. If you look carefully at the close-up, detail photo of the fabric you can probably discern a ply joint or two, most easily noticed on the warp yarns. It is said that this length of old kaya or mosquito netting was made in Tohoku or Japan's rural northeastern region and where folk textiles are concerned this is always an attractive attribute since Tohoku is known for its rich folk culture.Recommended.
