With American entry into the war, food required to fuel the armed forces created a need for rationing on the home-front, as well as an uptick for farm production in America - at a time when many farm workers were deployed overseas. This poster highlights the need for labor to harvest America's abundant farms for both those at home and those fighting abroad. The concept of food as a weapon was carried through in many similarly themed posters that demonstrated the conservation of home-grown and canned foods, the repurposing of leftovers, or the benefits of healthy eating. Stevan Dohanos (1907-1994) was a successful commercial artist active in the mid twentieth century. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and admired artists like Grant Wood and Edward Hopper.
